Livelihood effects of rubber boom and rubber bust in Xishuangbanna, SW China

Abstract:

From the 1990s onwards, a rubber boom, driven mainly by China´s emerging car industry, has resulted in massive land use as well as livelihood change especially of smallholder farmers in Xishuangbanna prefecture of Yunnan province, SW China. The boom came to an end in 2011 with a steep drop in rubber prices and was followed by a bust that is still ongoing and which is affecting the livelihoods and land use decisions of smallholder farmers. The presentation is based on research on rubber expansion into upper altitudes of Xishuangbanna prefecture and on the effects of the price drop on livelihoods of farmers in Manlin administrative village of Mengla county along an altitudinal gradient.
